Hi there people,
I have got Vbox 1.56 running on (just now) Kubuntu 8.04 and Windoze XP as a guest.

Q.1 It seems to upgrade VBox you lose all the existing Guest setups etc. ???? Am I (hopefully) reading it wrong here?

Q2. Even have Video working but no sound. Although no sound in Ubuntu either now!

Q3. Confused by the USB access: Is it only in the non-OSE edition? I guess my download from Ubuntu was the OSE and Ubuntu still doesn't offer the ver 6 it seems.

Q4. Would Ver 6 be any help with audio problem?

Really appreciate any help here.......

Q3. I believe, OSE doesn't offer USB support, ONLY non OSE edition from SUN offer USB.

Thanks for that, Newtecnics.
That's ONE question possibly answered - I wonder if anyone is sure.
Doesn't seem to be much anyone *is* sure of in this area... :-(

No, you won't lose any Guest systems, it's just that any saved states and snapshots aren't compatible with the newer version. There is confirmation that upgrading from 1.6.0 to 1.6.2 is possible with current snapshots and saved states.

I advise you to fix your audio in the Host first. Once you've done that, be sure to set the same audio server you use in your host for the Guest system (ALSA, PulseAudio, OSS, ESD). Ubuntu 8.04 is said to use PulseAudio as primary sound server, but I use ALSA and it works just fine.

Only the PUEL version supports USB. There will not be any USB support for the OSE version.

See question 2, solve your Host problem first. VB is just another application that can use your sound system. If your Host does not have audio, any audio application will fail to play audio. Be it VLC or Amarok or VB. A new version will not solve this. So check your system settings for audio.

I'm using Debian-Testing which is similar to Kubuntu. I successfully updated from 1.56 to 1.6 and I kept all my VMs and snapshots without problem. And everything worked. So for me, the 1.56 snapshots were consistent with 1.6.

For the USB problem, I can't recall what I specifically did (in Debian). Check that vboxusers have permission to access USB devices. Also, I found it worked better when I didn't select support for USB 2 and only used the older 1.1 support (in the USB settings). I use the non-OSE version as well, so it may be necessary to switch to the non-OSE version.

I hope this helps.
