Network adresses

Hi there. I am new to the vm software and need to know how to configure the network adresses of my pc. I have loaded windows XP to my vm while my host pc runs on windows 8.1.
I need to connect to a device with a fixed IP address of 172.16.17.2. What does the host PC's address need to be, and that of the vm and that of windows XP in order for me to connect to the device? Normally when I have not run a vm on my pc, the PC's IP address needed to be in close range of the device so 172.16.17.10 always works well for me. Any advice will be much appreciated. Tks, Russell

Where is this device? On the same network as the host computer? Why do you need to configure the IP address manually?

The first thing you need to do is set the vm to use bridged networking so that it is in the same network as the host. Then give both host and guest an IP in the same IP subnet as the device you want to connect to and the same subnet mask (if they cannot get their network config automatically from a DHCP server).
