Slow when running newer version of VirtualBox...

Post by foundroid »

Hi,

I have 3 VMs that were created using VirtualBox 4.3.12 and work great.

I attempted to upgrade to VirtualBox 4.3.20 to stay current. My VMs now run extremely slow.

Any ideas why?

Should VMs created using older version of VirtualBox be able to run on new versions?

Does something need to be configured on the VMs to run on the newer versions of VirtualBox?

HOST: Win 8.1 Pro
GUESTs: Win 8.1 Pro

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

VMs run slow because something is using additional CPU and/or I/O bandwidth, or your host or guest is short of RAM.

Instead of treating it like a magical box, simply examine the task list on both host and guest, using the standard task manager or your favorite equivalent, etc to see for yourself what process is using all the time or RAM. Then investigate why you need that process.

And yes, VMs created using past versions of the software should continue to run. As long as the VM recipe doesn't change they shouldn't even notice the difference.

But its so nice to think of it as a MagicalBox. Thank you for your time and tips. I'll investigate. I guess the assumption was that my currently configured VMs running on older versions of VirtualBox would run just as fine on new versions of VirtualBox without process tweaking. Magical!
