Problems Creating new Disks in 1.6

I am having trouble with VB 1.6 I installed on PCLinuxOS. First couple of failures I assumed it was the OS and tried different flavors of Linux to install as guest. All the same though when the install of the OS reached formatting the process stalled at 2%-4%. The whole system froze. Searching there it seemed was a known bug that affected the dynamically expanding option.
First few tries at creating a fixed disk (8Gb) froze at about 3-5% or seemed to. Reinstalled VB 1.6 from fresh download. Finally realized creating a fixed disk was freezing computer but not really stalling out. 16 hours later it finished. Tried an install. Got as far as the new install formatting disk and formatting seemed to freeze. Just gave up. Have tried Googeling the second problem but no answers.
Prior to this I used the 1.5.6 OSE version and everything worked fine. As I recall a very short time to create a disk and formatting by a guest during an install worked as expected.
System is an AMD 3200 CPU with 1GB memory. Hard drive is SATA. Home partition is 75Gb with 67Gb free. Root is 45Gb with 17Gb free. I'm setting memory on the virtual machine at 128Mb.
Thanks for any help.
