64 bit Windows 10

Post by levi_john »

I am new to this forum and have limited experience of virtual box. I have a 64 bit ISO copy of what is likely to become Windows 10 from Microsoft's site on DVD, and am trying to install it on Virtual box. Clearly there is no guest option for windows 10 in the initial drop down menu and so I have tried to set up for "windows other". When I start the process to read from the DVD, after the blue windows image appears I get a message Error code 0x0000005D and a request to restart the machine. For this I remove the dvd with the ISO on it and of course after rebooting and starting the process again I finish up with the same error code. I am assuming that I am not expected to restart the machine with the ISO image in the drive as I do not want to risk over writing the Windows8.1 software on the PC. Has anyone loaded " windows 10" onto Virtualbox or can anyone help. Any help would be appreciated.

Use the Windows 8.1 template, not "Windows Other".

Removing the DVD with the ISO on it is not necessary. VirtualBox doesn't care what drive an ISO is stored on, nor how often that drive is cycled. All VBox cares about is that the ISO file is available when it goes to read from it.

And of course: Windows 10 is not a supported guest, meaning it will work if it works, but nothing is guaranteed.

Thanks very much mpack. I have done what you say ie changed the guest to 8.1 and windows 10 has successfully loaded.
I would not have found that without your help.
