Windows Server 2012 R2 on VirtualBox

for some reason I cannot run Server 2012 R2 on VirtualBox is there a compatibility issue?

Most likely you didn't set the proper OS type for your guest. Please change the OS type of in your VM settings to "Windows 2012 / 64-bit"!
