VB does not recognize floppy drives that are connected to Mac host, and hence does not allow connecting these drives to any guest OS.

This command returns nothing: The floppy disk drive in the host is mounted to /dev/disk3 (and /dev/fd/0). I set VBOX_FLOPPY environment variable, as described in the VB manual, to /dev/disk3 and also to /dev/fd/0, but still VB cannot recognize it.

I'm running VB 4.3.20 under Mac OS X 10.10.1.

If these are USB3 Floppy drives or they are plugged into a USB3 hub, VirtualBox won't recognize them. VirtualBox doesn't support USB3.
