[Solved] USB drive not accessible in Win7 guest, Mac host

I'm using host MacOS 10.10.1, guest Windows 7 Ultimate on a 2013 iMac (USB 2 & 3 capable). VB version is 4.3.20, new today.
Here's the problem, I can see my USB 2 memory stick in Devices/USB Devices in black, but it does not appear in the Windows guest "Computer" (which is my normal way of accessing the information on the USB 2 stick).
How can I access the data on the USB 2 stick?
Thanks,
Jim

You need to create a USB filter for the guest. A blank filter will work. Once you create the filter you need to plug in the USB stick after your guest has started.
The extension pack has to be installed.
See 3.10 USB support in the Users Manual.

I have done all that.
I also installed the new 4.3.20 Extension pack and I still can not access the memory stick.
In the "Ports Settings/USB", the "Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller" can not be checked--it's grayed out.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
jim

Does the USB stick mount in your Windows guest? I just added a blank USB filter to a new W7 guest to make sure something didn't go wrong with VB 4.3.20 and it works for me.

How did you install the extension pack? It shouldn't be grayed out unless you have the guest open.

I can see the USB drive only in VB, not in windows. It is not mounted in windows.

VM log file please. Right click the VM in the GUI. Select "Show Log". Save "VBox.log" to a file. Compress that file and attach it to a message here.

Extension pack was installed with the guest closed.

Code: Select all

It appears you don't have the extension pack installed.

I'll try installation again. Check back in 10 mins--Windows is updating. I should have retried by then.

Okay well when you are ready… download the extension pack
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... ox-extpack
Then with VirtualBox open but the guest closed, just double click on the extension pack file and follow the prompts.

OK. I've installed the extention and a popup window indicated that it installed.
I restarted the guest with no success.
I restarted VB and the guest again and SUCCESS!
Thanks for the help. Without it I'm sure I would have given up and moved on.
Thanks again.
