Cannot connect GPT formatted USB 3 drive

I am running Windows 8.1 Guest (with latest additions installed) in VB 4.3.20 on OS X 10.10.1 host.

When I connect a GPT formatted USB 3 HDD Windows gives the error "the last usb device you connected to this computer malfuntioned and Windows does not recognize it". Note that this drive mounts correctly in OS X host and on "real" Windows PC. I also have no problem connecting MBR partitioned external USB 2 HDD or USB keys to the Guest.

The log from Virtualbox only says this which indicates (to me) that the filter is working OK.

Code: Select all

00:41:10.425347 VUSB: attached '000000010331d960[proxy 059b:0070]' to port 1
00:41:10.425773 EHCI: USB Operational
In device manager (on the Windows Guest) the device shows up as "Unknown USB Device (Invalid Device Descriptor)" with a yellow "!". I have tried uninstalling the driver and restarting but the issue remains.

Any ideas what I can try? I'm not sure if the issue is USB 3 or GPT or both.

First step is to recognize the device and then read its contents. You're stuck at the device, so no, GPT is not your problem at this point, USB3 is. You see VirtualBox doesn't work with USB3 ports and devices. Either connect your USB3 device to a USB2 port (if you have one) or connect it to a USB2 hub first.

Thanks for that. I'd have found it was USB 3 support issue if I hadn't been so hung up on the GPT thing...

I've only got USB 3 ports so I'll use a USB 2 drive until 3 is supported.

Or bypass the issue entirely, by mapping the drive as a shared folder.
