cannot use Mac if it sleeps and a USB filter is live.

Hello,
I've used a USB filter so that devices that are plugged into my Mac get passed directly to the WIndows 7 VM I need for work.
If my macbook sleeps for too long, and I open it, I can't type or use the mouse. I presume this is because the VM has captured them and I have no way to log back into the macbook other than to hold the power button in, which improperly shuts down both the host mac and the windows VM. The only other way I've been able to fix this is if I have access to another computer on a network and the Macbook is set to auto-join, I can ssh into the macbook and kill the virtualbox processes. then I can log in because keyboard and mouse are re-restored to the mac instead of the VM
Thoughts?
