KB2976536 breaks VirtualBox on Windows 8.1

After installing November 2014 anti-malware platform update for Windows Defender in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 (KB2976536), I get this when trying to launch a virtual machine: see attachment.
Uninstalling KB2976536 solves the problem (disabling Windows Defender doesn't).

OK, so the problem was actually fixed in versions 4.3.16 and 4.3.18.
That rises a different question - what's the point in "Check for updates" button in the "Help" section if it keeps telling me that I have the most recent version, although I'm still on 4.3.14?

A recent post on the forum says, if I remember right, that the developers don't always tell the update system that a newer version is available until they're sure it's good. 4.3.14 & onward is still in the throes of the security hardening issue, so the update system is still set back at 4.3.12 (I think, I can't find the post right now)
