Unable to access CD/DVD in Windows 8.1

Post by Whitehorse »

Greetings :)

I have installed VirtualBox, Guest Addition CD Image, Extension Pack,

I want to access my CD/DVD drive.

In VirtualBox once I open Windows Explorer CD drive shows as follows

VirtualBox Status Board at bottom right shows as follows

Settings shows as follows

I already placed CD on drive.
Once I click the CD on Windows Explorer I get the following Message

How to I correct the problem? I installed Windows OS using DVD. I think the problem appeared once I install Guest Addition CD Image. Not sure.
Request your help.

Thank you in advance.

Say you have two PCs side by side on a desk. Do you expect that navigating to the CD drive on PC-B will show you the contents of a CD you inserted into PC-A? Do you believe that because both PCs call the CD drive "D:" that must mean they are looking at the same drive?

Because that seems to be what is implied by your question above.

The VM is a separate PC, with a separate CD drive entirely unrelated to the host CD drive, regardless of what drive letter the PC's Operating System has assigned to the drive.

You can however map the virtual CD onto the host CD drive by making the appropriate selection in the VM settings or in the VM Device|CD menu.

I am afraid I am having a similar problem.

"You can however map the virtual CD onto the host CD drive by making the appropriate selection in the VM settings or in the VM Device|CD menu"

Could you please tell me how do I map the settings above?

I am unable to access the guest CD drive in the mapping settings.

Thanks

I am running the latest version of virtual box 4.3.18 - just wondering if the bug https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3494 is still not fixed as I seem to face the same issue.

That ticket doesn't reveal a bug, it reveals that many people don't understand the difference between data and audio CDs. VirtualBox only claims support for the former. Sometimes audio CDs will work if you enable passthrough mode, but there is no guarantee of that.

Yay! Checking the "passthru" box worked for me in getting VB to recognize an audio CD in the drive . Thanks for the tip.
