I have several virtual machines with windows xp.
Under w7-64
I put two screenshots. In one of them i don't see the .vbox extension file.
Sometime I launch from this files...
Both VM go well.
But why have dissapeared in one of the virtual machines the vbox extension file ?

.vbox files were introduced in VirtualBox v4.0.0. This version also introduced the concept of a VM folder where all files belonging to one VM are located, and separate media registries for each VM.
The top window shows some of the files used by a VirtualBox v3.x VM. Note in particular that the hard disk image is not stored there.
