Re: Too many CPUs warning
I'm not sure what you think that clears up. I was clear about that already - i.e. I know what an i7 is.

Did you look at those screenshots? Those were really the point of that post.mpack wrote:I'm not sure what you think that clears up. I was clear about that already - i.e. I know what an i7 is.

No, I don't click on obfuscated offsite links. If you want me to see images, attach them locally.

Notice the "Upload attachment" tab below the main white panel when you compose a reply.

Hm, I don't see one of those. Perhaps that's a product of my account not being old and wise enough to handle images responsibly according to oracle.mpack wrote:Notice the "Upload attachment" tab below the main white panel when you compose a reply.
I don't blame you for not wanting to look at those incredibly sketchy images, but please do. I think it would really clear things up.

Re: Too many CPUs warning
No. New users are allowed to upload attachments, it's only URLs they can't post, because that marks you as a spammer.
On the other hand, I hadn't previously noticed that this support discussion is taking place in the Suggestions forum, which doesn't allow attachments (unless you're a mod). Moving you to the "Using VirtualBox" forum.

Re: Too many CPUs warning
Thank you! I wasn't sure where to post it, and I guess I chose incorrectly.
Also, sorry for these being so large. Only the left window is really important. And I had to make these low quality to be allowed to upload them.
Here is the screenshot for 4 CPUs for my guest: Here is the screenshot for an 8 CPU guest:

Re: Too many CPUs warning
Sorry, I'm still not sure what the images are supposed to tell me. I see a typical graphic for quad core processor. It even says "4 cores" both times.

Re: Too many CPUs warning
It shows that a guest with 8 cpus uses all 8 logical processors, whereas a guest with 4 cpus (the number of actual cores in my computer) only uses half my logical processors, and only one hyperthread in each physical core.mpack wrote:Sorry, I'm still not sure what the images are supposed to tell me. Re: Too many CPUs warning
I see. I think you'll need to ask the devs about this one. No doubt it will have some subtle explanation.

Re: Too many CPUs warning
Thanks. My first thought as to an explanation would be that my guest "sends" as many processes as it has CPUs to the host, and my host then assigns each process to a virtual CPU, but that doesn't seem like how it should work. If my guest has actuall access to the inner workings of the CPU, it should be allowed to figure out how to hyperthread itself.mpack wrote:I see. I think you'll need to ask the devs about this one. Re: Too many CPUs warning
I get the same warning.

Re: Too many CPUs warning
So does anyone else who assigns more virtual cpus to a guest than the host cpu has.giacomo wrote:I get the same warning.

There are three groups of people. Those that can count and those that can't.

Re: Too many CPUs warning
You are not listening to what people are saying.
If I run Ubuntu directly on my processor (i7-4790K), lscpu would give
CPU(s): 4
Thread(s) per core: 2
1. How do you set up an Ubuntu Guest in VirtualBox so that it has this configuration?
2. In any case, I ran Ubuntu as Guest with 8 cores, despite the warning in VirtualBox that I can't use more than 4.
lscpu capture shows 8 cores on the guest.
htop shows 8 cpus
Explanation?
