Downloaded and installed VirtualBox 4.3.18 r96516 and installed on windows 8, Dual Core 2GHz, 2 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD. So far so good.

Created a virtual machine Android x86,

downloaded android-x86-4.4-r1.iso but when I tried to install that through DVD setting, it gave the error

There is no clue what went wrong.

Please suggest what to do.
(Have read in a forum post that downgrading to 4.3.12 might solve the problem, but if I am made to download a 300 MB again, I will die. We are in INDIA. We can't afford unlimited internet. Why don't you give in specs which version is suited for which machine.)

ASIDE:
1. Please make it convenient for users to copy the version name from the software's Help-About. No fun finding an image there. Make it text so that we can copy paste it from there.

2. Please realize that Windows uses different eol, CR-LF from *nix so please change format of your LOG files and give proper eol so that they wouldn't run as a long unending line impossible to understand.

See the "security issues" discussion at the top of this forum. For now your only workaround is to revert to VBox 4.3.12, painful or not. And incidentally, the 4.3.12 download is about 100MB, not 300MB.

On your aside point 2: the solution to your EOL problem is to use a competent text editor, not the crippled Notepad thing that comes bundled with Windows. Notepad++ is much better and still free.

There is no clear 4.3.12 at android-x86 dot org site.

There is only one 4.3 there - that is android-x86-4.3-20130725.iso.

Is that the one I should download and use?

Also, could you just describe my problem in layman's term? What my system is lacking that prevents me from using latest huge build, and miss on new features.

my Intel graphics card on Asus motherboard is some 5-6 years old, and bluestacks doesn't install in that, terminates making graphics card responsible. Could that be the reason, and would 4.3.12 still work in spite of that.

ASIDE: Whatever MS releases becomes ipso facto standard. So if notepad is there, files should be open-able and readable in that. Methink.
All other files have opened well in it, just this file is not opening properly.

Sorry, we don't support Android, and I have no idea about the contents of the ISO you are referencing. You would need to ask on the originating site what the requirements are. That said, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't want to run on 4.3.12.

The exact make and model of your host graphics card isn't very important since it isn't used by VirtualBox - it's only used by the host OS. If the graphics in other host apps works fine then so it will in VirtualBox too. It is after all just another host app. I might have to qualify that statement if you were going to install Guest Additions, but as there are none available for Android we can avoid that discussion.

Aside: there are a lot of crippling limitations in Notepad, but you are happy to continue using it then that's your choice. Don't expect the rest of the world to change to accomodate you however.

As to why 4.3.18 isn't working for you: in 4.3.14 the developers added new "hardening" features designed to stop malware from injecting itself into the VirtualBox executing process, and potientially running at a higher privilege level than it could by itself (the Oracle process having a trusted signature). Unfortunately lots of legitimate applications use the same tricks that malware uses (*), and rules have to be developed which allow these to run. Some of the problems were fixed in 4.3.16 and 4.3.18, but until all the kinks are worked out, 4.3.12 is the latest version which doesn't include the hardening feature. The only features you'll be missing from earlier versions is - maybe - support for brand new OS's such as Win10. I imagine that someone running an unsupported guest OS such as Android really won't care about that.

(*) I saw a new example just today, a spell checker DLL that can inject itself into any other app.

Any specific reason for not supporting Android when other similar vm, etc. support that.

ASIDE: I had hardly ever used notepad myself in last 15 years. Had used metapad for years and then using notepad++ itself since. However, keeping the default association of txt with notepad so that any unknown new things get opened in windows default quickly.

Actually, XP can run perfectly well in a relatively small amount of memory. In fact 512MB is perfect. Ideally you would have plenty of disk space however. A 32bit Linux might be worth a look too. It all depends on what you're trying to achieve with the VM.

I'm a user like yourself, I have no authority to speak on behalf of the devs. However I would guess that the reason is the same as the one for not supporting (say) Windows 98, i.e. that Oracle's paying customers have not asked for the feature.

Android is not a mainstream OS on x86 processors, which is the only kind of VM you can make in VirtualBox. Now that good tablets running full versions of Windows 8 are appearing (Surface Pro, Asus T100) I suspect Android will never catch on in the business tablet market.

If a text file opens in one long monolithic run-on wall of text in Notepad, open it in Wordpad - that program interprets non-cr-lf end-of-lines properly.

Except that Wordpad is not a plain ASCII text editor, which opens up a whole other category of failure modes.

Following your tip that it will not work, I went ahead and found Genymotion on google, and downloaded and installed it.

It has VB 4.3.12 so it downgraded my install from my latest install to 4.3.12.

But then Genymotion tried to download another 200 MB somthing for some nexus 10, I gave up.

I tried VB 4.3.12 once more. And it worked and I could install the same android iso.

Now I am using VB 4.3.12 and android on my w8. All these you said will not work.

As a proof of the same, I am showing screenshot of my pc showing this very post while drafting it, side by side with and android VM running downloading from google playstore. You must be out of mind to misguide new users, and repel them away from this software. Or you might be some competitor's paid agent, sent to do this exact sabotage on purpose.

Shame on you and your poor ethics.

I hope that moderators and admins of this site/ forum would make a note of above outright wrong suggestion given by this user trying to repel me away from this your software, that I can now use well. Please take some action against such people.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Nobody even once said that Android didn't work, in fact I have a working Android VM right here on the PC I'm using now. And furthermore here's an exact quote from my post above "That said, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't want to run on 4.3.12" ("it" being the Android ISO suggested).

What I said is that Android is not supported, which only a exceedingly stupid person could interpret as meaning "will not work". Especially in light of everything else said.

The Genymotion site is not affiliated with us: we are not responsible for anything they say or do, nor do we care, nor do we feel obliged to help. That is what "not supported" means.

I appreciate that English is probably not your first language and that the exact meaning of an English sentence might escape you. That does not give you an excuse to accuse people of bad faith when they're trying to help you.
