VirtualBox refuses to open, presents error

Hello all, this is my first post on here, so apologies if I am not presenting this correctly.

I recently have become frustrated with troubles I've been having with VirtualBox.

After several reinstalls and complete deletions of any trace of the VirtualBox program, the program presents the following error message on executing.
(the forum won't let me post a picture so I'll describe the error:)

Error Message Title: "VirtualBox - Critical Error"
Red X Error Icon
Text: "Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object

The application will now terminate."

Details: "Callee RC: E_NOINTERFACE (0x80004002)"

Running the application as administrator provides no help.
Running the application in compatibility mode allows the VM manager to open, but starting a machine generates the same error message as above except the details read:
"Callee RC: E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)"

Any ideas? I'd really like to get VBox back up and running as I use it often.
Thanks!

Follow here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=64111 and provide the VBoxStartup.log

Actually, that error has been around a long time and has no connection that I know of to the hardening issues discussed in the linked topic. In any case the user has not mentioned a VirtualBox version so we can't assume it's a version affected by hardening issues.

The error described is usually caused by failing to install the software properly (i.e. with sufficient admin rights) on a 64bit Windows host OS. On that host you need to run the installer using "Run as administrator".

Okay, I am running version 4.3.18, and I did install with admin rights.

What is the path to the VBoxStartup.log? I can only find ones linked to specific machines.

VBoxStartup.log is indeed created for specific VMs. However: the problem you described is still not a hardening issue, IME it's an install issue. But, it could be one of several such issues: installing without admin rights, installing for the wrong user (e.g. installing using "Admin" user account), or caused by the recent Windows Update MSI bugged update, etc.

Hi People,

I have been experiencing this problem for some time too. 4.2.16 is the last version I can install and use. Every later version fails and has done so since 4.2.18 was released. I have tried installing with Admin rights, removing previous installs, and other suggestions.

Not sure if this is related. I have tried installing 4.2.18 again using admin mode and noticed that RealPlayer Cloud lost its internet connection. Installing 4.3.18 causes Creative Cloud to lose its internet connection. So what is VirtualBox doing to networking services?

Regards

Andrew

Thanks to the post above (kudos to Andrew!), I have my VBox working using version 4.2.16. I'm hoping the problem will be solved by the next release. The strange thing is, VBox 4.3.18 will run perfectly on my Windows 10 TP on the same PC (dual boot) and even on my Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet running 8.1! Is this a Windows 7 issue? Hmm...

PS: Only other thing is I know I've had a version of VBox newer than 4.2.16 running on this machine on this OS before which is curious.
