VirtualBox 4.3.18 on Windows Technical Preview

Post by arrmo »

Hi,

I have installed VirtualBox 4.3.18 in a Windows Technical Preview host ... but it won't execute / run. Is this a known issue?

Thanks!

SUBJECT: "Visualization enabling" for my HP Pavilion 15-e020us Notebook PC
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated—we are presenting on free software from SAS Institute (for students, professors, or anyone) to run "SAS University Edition" using Oracle VM VirtualBox.

An expert at the store where I bought my HP spent an hour investigating via Google-search and other resources and says the problem is that I am running WIN 8.1 and need to upgrade to WIN 8.1 Pro (or Windows 8.1 Enterprise) and I think he is correct.

I was able to go to the Control Panel > Security > etc > Advanced and see that the switch for 'visualization' was not 'enabled' i.e. "NO" but was not able to change it.

Any assistance in understanding "Visualization enabling" for my HP Pavilion 15-e020us Notebook PC will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! We present our findings in less than a week.

We are interested (generally) in any usage of Oracle VM VirtualBox to access 'SAS University Edition' since they have had over 200,000 downloads. Visit the SAS website to learn more; this is a great new development!

VirtalBox does not run on my Windows TP 9860 64 bit either. I have ensured (amongst other things such as compatibility and Administrator) that Hyper V is disabled, but to no avail.

Also, Microsoft Hyper V on Windows TP seems to have problems as well !!

The 9880 update is expected anytime this week, I hope they will fix this issue.

VirtualBox was running on my Windows 10 when I installed the first version that I downloaded (build 9841). After I let Windows download and install the newer update (build 9860), VirtualBox quit working.

Apparently, build 9880 is not going to be released, after all, although some updates are expected on Update Tuesday.

I'm just curious. Did you expect Microsoft to modify Windows 10 to work with the current version of VirtualBox? If VirtualBox didn't work on the previous version why would it work in the current version? VirtualBox will work on Windows 10 when Windows 10 gets at least closer to a final version and VirtualBox is tweaked to work with it.

I found that the older version Virtualbox 4.3.12 works on the Windows 10 build 9879. At least it starts up and runs my Linux VM.

That would seem to mean the hardening issues with versions of VB > 4.3.12 are the problem. So until those are fixed…

I'm not quite sure why are you posting... Are you trying to stir something up? Please don't post unless you have something useful to add to the discussion.

To answer your question... Because things change in software that is being developed. I write software myself, so I might know something about that. Plus, the fact that it worked on an earlier build and not on a newer build suggests that something changed in the OS and perhaps might change again.

I believe there may be something in Windows 10 as well because the newest VBox worked in an earlier build of Window 10.

I'm not sure how expressing the idea that perhaps the hardening issues with VB > 4.3.12 may be the problem is "stirring something up".

Normally applications have to be modified to run with a new OS if they don't already run. Not the other way around. I guess we'll see.

Thanks for the pointer! Uninstalled 4.3.20, went back to 4.3.12 ... and now it works again!

Hi,

Has anyone been able to get a newer version of VB working yet?

Thanks!
