Slow performance

I installed VB on a Windows 7 Pro machine, a refurbished HP Workstation, 6-core Xeon, 16 GB memory, tons of disk.
I've installed Ubuntu 13.10, and the installation was smooth, and the guest OS starts and runs, even captures the USB devices
I tagged for capture. So far, so good.

However (there's always one of those, isn't there?) it runs like molasses in January. The VM start-up takes almost 2 minutes,
and the graphics responds in seconds vs. millseconds, i.e. I can see the intermediate changes in menus, or X-windows changes.
I gave it a couple of GB of memory, and plenty of virtual disk space.

I suspect this might have something to do with core assignments or possibly graphics memory, but I'm not very well versed in those things.
Is there something I should have done/be doing to make it run faster?

Do I find that on the actual guest OS or in the VB window?
...
Never mind - found where it is. I'll have to copy it from the computer in question.

I don't see where you have installed the guest additions and that will be a big improvement with Ubuntu 13.10, especially if you enable 3D acceleration in the guest settings.

You should also consider updating to VirtualBox version 4.3.12. Newer are available but they have issues right now.

Thanks. I'm new to VB, and thought the install took care of all that.
I'll download and install them, along with the newer version and see what happens.

Problem seems to be mostly solved. I did two things:
1. Installed the latest version of the software.
2. Significantly upped the video memory allocation.

It's still a little slow, but it's acceptable for what I'm doing.

Thanks for the help.
