Slow performance

I installed VB on a Windows 7 Pro machine, a refurbished HP Workstation, 6-core Xeon, 16 GB memory, tons of disk.
I've installed Ubuntu 13.10, and the installation was smooth, and the guest OS starts and runs, even captures the USB devices
I tagged for capture. So far, so good.
However (there's always one of those, isn't there?) it runs like molasses in January. The VM start-up takes almost 2 minutes,
and the graphics responds in seconds vs. millseconds, i.e. I can see the intermediate changes in menus, or X-windows changes.
I gave it a couple of GB of memory, and plenty of virtual disk space.
I suspect this might have something to do with core assignments or possibly graphics memory, but I'm not very well versed in those things.
Is there something I should have done/be doing to make it run faster?
