Can't change Ubuntu 14.10 resolution on VB 4.3.12

I was using Ubuntu/Xubuntu 14.04.1 in virtual machines, based on VirtualBox 4.3.12, Windows 7 x64 host. Today i have installed 14.10 update on both machines. Reinstalled Guest Additions and rebooted. Can't change resolution on both machines (only 640x480 is available). I suppose 14.10 has changed something on a video side. Have to use VB 4.3.12 because of this issue (present in 4.3.16 and 4.3.18) viewtopic.php?f=6&t=63634

Wonder if someone get same resolution issue on the latest VB 4.3.18, or is it working fine with Ubuntu 14.10 guests? Can't try it myself as if i install 4.3.18 guest additions, i probably won't be able to go back to using VB 4.3.12. Or could i later uninstall 4.3.18 GA and use 4.3.12?

Not much hope, but maybe someone will think of a solution for this using VB 4.3.12. Or maybe i should wait for some 4.3.20+ version which should fix both issues..

It is possible this is related to a problem described elsewhere. I would link to it on "Make Tech Easier," but the forum is reasonably suspicious of new users posting URLs.

I had the same problem installing Xubuntu 14.10 on VirtualBox 4.3.10 running on Xubuntu 14.04. Short version, run this on the guest:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms
I now have a much better display resolution in the guest.

This worked and after i restarted VM it even restored the normal previous resolution. Though System Settings app is not launching anymore. Also threw some errors about video. Well, i'm using 4.3.12 VirtualBox and this command installed 4.3.18 guest additions, i think. So, maybe some incompatibility. Other than System Settings everything works fine and you don't even have to reinstall additions after kernel updates. Neat.

Same worked fine for Xubuntu 14.10 and here system manager app works fine.
