USB Problem (solved)

Hi everybody,
I am running VB on a headless Ubuntu Server 12.04. I installed different guests (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and all kind of Linux) and all were working perfect. Out of the blue when the guest starts it aborts on an early stage. So I was trying to find the problem and as soon as I deactivated the USB, everthing is working fine and the guest starts like always. Does anybody have any idea, why USB is causing trouble all of the sudden?
Thanks for some help
Tom

Minimum information needed for assistance. The most helpful part would be to attach two zipped logs 1) USB enabled and the guest failing and 2) USB disabled and the guest working. Please include the logs from a complete session, i.e. boot and shutdown the guest completely.

Ok, but which one, I got vbox.log, vbox1.log, vbox2.log, vbox3.log?

vbox.log is always the most recent. vbox1.log the previous log, etc. so if you launch your guest with USB enabled then shutdown your guest, then start the guest with USB disabled and shutdown. the logs you want to post are vbox.log & vbox1.log.

USB requires the extension pack, and the extension pack version needs to match the VBox version.

Ok, so I am trying to renew the extension but got the following result:
~# VBoxManage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.18-96516.vbox-extpack
0%...
Progress state: NS_ERROR_FAILURE
VBoxManage: error: Failed to install "/root/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.18-96516.vbox-extpack"

VBoxManage: error: Context: "int handleExtPack(HandlerArg*)" at line 1143 of file VBoxManageMisc.cpp
So I was trying to uninstall and got the next error:
# VBoxManage extpack uninstall Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.2-90405.vbox-extpack
0%...
Progress state: NS_ERROR_FAILURE
VBoxManage: error: Failed to uninstall "Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.2-90405.vbox-extpack"

Do you always run your host as root?

Yep, it is just a testing enviroment...

Testing or not VirtualBox was not meant to run as root. It throws all normal diagnostics out the window.

Problem solved:
Remove the old extension pack like
VBoxManage extpack uninstall "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack"
Install the new extension pack:
sudo VBoxManage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.18-96516.vbox-extpack
Everything works
