[Solved] Importing .ova running out of hard drive space

Running Vbox on OS X 10.10. I am trying import a 22G .ova that is stored on an external drive. I have 58G available on my internal drive. The import starts, but after 3-4 minutes, I get an error from OS Xthat my hard drive is full. Any ideas on how this could happen, as I know people that have imported this to a Windows Host and not had problem.

I believe .ova files are compressed. if that is the case 58G may not be enough space to decompress the file.

What you could try is in the VirtualBox preferences, temporarily move the default location for new machines to a drive with more space. Import the .ova, then you could just restore the default location for new machines and move the imported machine to the VM folder on your Mac if there is room.

Been told the 22G will expand to 35G worth of vmdk. I thought having the 22G on the external would leave me the required space on the internal to handle the 35G. Going to try to expand to my external just to see.

Of course if that works you can leave it on the external drive and just use "Add Machine" in VirtualBox and run it from the external drive.

SOLVED - It was 58G worth of vmdk. Changed the location for new machines to the external drive and expanded to there. No choice but to run it from the external. Thanks for help
