Dratted USB3 strike again!

Post by Rootman »

More of a comment then a serous post.

I just bought a new whip ass laptop to replace my aging one, it came with ALL USB3 ports. While they are nice and sure are fast I forgot all about VirtualBox not supporting them. I imported my VMs and they practically flew with on this new system. I set up my USB filters and plugged my drives in and then ... nothing. Crap, they won't work. I even plugged in a USB 2 hub hoping that perhaps it would trick VB into working, didn't hope for much and was not disappointed :)

So I use the drives through shared folders from the host.

I know it's been asked before, but is VB ever going to support USB3?

Have you thought about what USB3 device support would involve, say when running an XP guest?

It's a minefield. Over time I've discovered that I mostly don't need USB. E.g. USB flash drives can be accessed as shared folders, printers can be accessed and shared over the host only network, etc.

p.s. USB3 ports is not a problem on Windows hosts, if you plug USB2 devices into them. For USB3 devices which don't actually need the bandwidth then another trick is to plug a USB2 hub into the host port.

There's also that Universal USB feature that I've been meaning to check out for a while, i.e. USB over a network.
