USB responsiveness has declined, how can I increase it?

I have some hardware that is basically an interface to my car and has a USB cable. I have to run the software in Windows XP x86 due to driver and software limitations so I have that as a guest that I use on my Windows 8 x64 host. The software in the guest is very picky with timing and occasionally there will be "controller not responding" errors. This was rare in Virtualbox 4.3.12 but since updating to 4.3.18 it is intolerable and the software can't be used. I'm not sure what changed but whatever it was it's had a negative effect. I downgraded to 4.3.12 and everything is back to normal (a few errors here and there).

What has changed between VirtualBox 4.3.12 and 4.3.18 that affected USB? Are there any good VirtualBox USB settings/prefs I can change to increase its reliability in the guest? I have 'Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller' checked. Thanks
