[Solved] Issues with Windows 8.1 VM on Mac

Post by Kizmar »

Since updating the host OS to Yosemite, I've noticed the VM is slower in general. I've also noticed that if I have it in Fullscreen Mode and am on a different desktop for a few minutes, my Windows VirtualBox VM goes black and completely unresponsive. The only way to reset it is to go to the VB console and power down the machine. This has happened multiple times just this morning.

Anyone else experiencing this as well?

I seem to have lots of random issues when using VirtualBox in Fullscreen mode now. It tends to lock up also. Just got this after it locking up in Fullscreen and me attampting to take it out of Fullscreen...

I am running Windows 8.1 as a guest on OSX 10.10. I have no problem switching from Full Screen and back. As far as the black screen I don't run seperate spaces but one thing you can try is setting VirtualBox to never sleep. Right-Click on the VB Application icon>get info>check Prevent App Nap.

You should attach your compressed Vbox.log as well.

Here's the most recent log file for the VM...
VBox.log.3.public.zip

the most recent log should just say vbox.log

I moved my Windows 8.1 guest to a separate space. It's been idle for 30 mins and hasn't turned black yet. I do have Prevent App Nap enabled. Make sure of course that power management in Windows itself isn't set to go to sleep.

btw, it seems if I'm reading it correctly you have all 8 virtual cores assigned to your guest. 2 would be better.

Ooops, attached. I assumed it counted up as new logs were created.

I enabled "Prevent App Nap", and so far so good! I did also go into the VM Windows settings and turn off any sleep / power saving settings.

the last log isn't complete which I gather means you posted it while the guest was still open? you should still reduce the number of cores. is it still crashing when switched to full screen?

[Solution] Issues with Windows 8.1 VM on Mac

So far it seems much more stable. I haven't had issues with Fullscreen mode since enabling "Prevent App Nap", and it seems to be performing better while using since reducing the cores form 8 to 2.

Edit: Thank you for the suggestions by the way. :)
