host-only

I have windows 7/pro installed with virtualbox 4.3.12
my ip-address is 192.168.1.2
I try to select file-preferences-network-hostonly networks
there is a setting :virtualbox host-only ethernet adapter
trying to edit and entering : 192.16.1.2 255.255.255.0 --ok
each time I edit this setting it returns to
Ethernet adapter VirtualBox Host-Only Network:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::ecf4:ad48:5a0c:96d3%35
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.150.211
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0

in my vm I created 2 devices eth0/1 host-only nat
when starting the vm : it tries to network configuration and times out and no network is defined
I even turned off my firewall-antivirus but same symptom - also after boot

any idea on this
thanks for all update/help
best regards, Guy Przytula

You should never change the host-only address scheme to match you local LAN, It does not work that way.

If you need the guest on the LAN segment use Bridged instead.

thanks for the update
I used local-host becausee
I just want to access the guest from my local laptop - connected or not
the guest does not need to be part of lan
I followed some guides in another forum
any other link that I can follow ?

Following external links will most of the time cause you to fail.

It is really easy to setup the guest if you leave the host-only sset to default and simply select the host-only mode in the guest settings. It will get its IP address via dhcp from VirtualBox and all will be well.

If you leave it set to default the following will be what you see in the host/guest.

Host = 192.168.56.1 Guest = 192.168.56.101

You can add a second virtual adapter set to NAT if you need the Internet in the guest.

again thanks for the update (but I am not a network specialist and just following pages ..)
I did as indicated but : still having problems
I defined in Vbox : preferences - network : host-only adapter and did not change the settings
in vm - network defined adapter : host-only pointing to the previous name defined in vbox
starting the guest ubuntu12.4 : waiting for network configuration - waiting 60sec more - started without full network....
no network : only loopback adapter
in windows :
Ethernet adapter VirtualBox Host-Only Network:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::ecf4:ad48:5a0c:96d3%35
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.150.211
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
in the tcpipv4 properties of this device I see : obtain address automatically
any other setting I should inspect/set

Post the following results from the hosts command window.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage list hostonlyifs

Code: Select all

VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details
Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note: you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Well that is all messed up. You need to put it all back to defaults.

Plus I don't see the second part that I asked for.

I understand why the first adapter (host-only) is not working you have it disabled in the guest setting, but the NAT or second adapter should have made a connection.

Do the following and see if it shows IP addresses in the guest.
  • 1) enable the first adapter in the guest ( guest must be shut down )
    2) delete /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules so it will configure it again on the next boot
