I am trying to operate VB on a Macbook Pro with 10.9.5. I downloaded the dmg, installed VB in the Aps folder and created a virtual disk with the intention to install Windows 7 64 bit. I downloaded the Extension Pack but when I tried to install it (and accept) I get a message saying: The installer failed with exit code 1: VBoxExtPackHelperApp: error: THe owner is not root: '/Applications'. When go to my virtual disk and click Start to load up my Windows OS CD I get a fail message saying: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine... Failed to load VMMRO.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT. I am therefore completely stuck.

Run the Repair Disk Permissions using DIsk Utility on your MAC host then it should work.

Thank you. That worked perfectly for installing the Extension Pack. However when I try to Start the machine in VB (by putting my Windows 7 disk into the drive and navigating to it) I get a message saying FATAL: No bootable medium Found! System halted. What next?

- Where from did you get "it"? Do you have a link if it is a downloadable one?
- What form is it? A DVD, an ISO?
- Is your VM set to boot from it?

I bought the Windows 7 64bit installation DVD online and inserted it into the Drive where it was visible in the Mac Finder. When I clicked to 'Start' my virtual disk in VB I was presented with the option to choose where to run from and directed it to the DVD. I then got the error message: "FATAL: No bootable medium Found! System halted." I don't seem to be able to re-access the menu for "Host drive" to try again however.

In order to access the "Host Drive" option after you've run the first-time wizard, go to VM Settings, Storage, select the CD icon on the left side then click on the CD icon on the right side and select the "Host Drive" from the drop-down list. But, since it failed with a "FATAL: No bootable medium Found! System halted." then, that's what it is. Your DVD is not bootable. It may be a corrupt DVD or a ServicePack DVD. In any event, it's not bootable. Any more information on the DVD itself?

Also, make sure that under the VM Settings, System, in the boot order the CD/DVD appears higher than the Hard Disk.

Thanks for the answer. That seems to have started the process again properly and it recognised the DVD second time around.

The software took almost two days to install! I eventually noticed that there was a invalid setting warning in the Settings menu alterting me to the Execution Cap was set at 1%. I have reset it to 40% which may have helped. Are there any other things in the settings I should be aware of to make the machine run efficiently? Currently I have base memory as 512MB and the virtual HD can expand to 30GB if it needs to.
My MacBook Pro spec is:
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 3 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 8 GB
I am also connected to the Ethernet on the Mac but the VM cannot see the connection. It cannot also see if I open my wireless network. How can I fix that?

All of the GUI settings are important, otherwise they wouldn't be presented in the GUI. Are there any more "invalid settings" warnings?

Incidentally: moving this discussion to "OS X Hosts".

There are no more warnings and the VM seems to be working OK although slowly. I cannot get it to see my internet connections however and it cannot see a Palm device I am trying to hotsync via USB to the Palm software I have installed. Any ideas for either of those issues?
