VMs Very Slow

Looking for suggestions for a problem with a friend's laptop. His machine is a new HP Envy running Windows 8 with i7 processor & 8 GB of RAM. He lives out of town so the next time I visit, I'd like to come armed with things to try.
I installed 4.3.18 as Administrator without issue. However, when I downloaded Mint 17, the VM installation took an inordinate amount of time to complete. (I say that because I've installed Mint on several different machines and it's a relatively quick process.) A pleasant surprise was that this version of Mint seems to come with GuestAdditions preloaded a la openSUSE. Even so, when I ran it, it was very slow to boot up and ran very slow - windows were slow to come up, streaming videos from youtube stuttered & lagged, etc. When I checked SystemMonitor inside the VM, the CPU was running at near 100%, even when the VM was idle.
I tried bumping the VMs RAM up (2 GB) but it made no difference. I also tried increasing the # of CPUs but the Host's BIOS apparently isn't configured for this (possible problem?) I also tried installing Zorin with the same behavior. Since 4.3.18 just came out, I tried installing it on my Win 7 laptop & the Mint VM installation went noticeably faster and ran smoother, despite being on a 4 year old machine. I'm also running 4.3.12 on a similarly aged 8.1 laptop and it's faster than my friend's.
Possibilities:
1. Win 8?
2. BIOS not set up for virtualization?
3. Hyper-V running?
4. ????
