NAT vs Bridged speeds on VPN connected Macs

Post by loukingjr »

Just a general question. Lately I've been connecting my Mac to the internet via VPN. When I do that my guests' connect speed drops radically. Normally my guest were set to NAT but I just found out if I switch to Bridged their connect speeds are back to normal. Does anyone feel like explaining why?

It also seems guests get to the desktop noticeably faster when using Bridged vs NAT. Possible?

Well, part of the reason seems to be when in Bridged mode the guest is not going through VPN.

Can you please give me the steps to make guest use the host VPN? You seem to have to have got that working.

My host is Mac OS-X and guest in Oracle Linux.

Not much to tell. I use OpenVPN and Tunnelblick on the Mac. If the guest network is set to NAT, it will connect through VPN, if set to Bridged, it will bypass VPN.

If you are connecting to the Internet through a VPN connection, it will be slower. VPN connections are encoded and encrypted and are definitely slower because of that.

much, much, much slower. lol I knew it would be slower. I go from 75Mbps down to 3.5Mbps down. Uploads aren't affected s much but still slower. On the other hand, is still faster than TOR.
