Cannot create bridged networking on Windows 8.1

I am trying (in vain) to bridge my linux guest using Virtualbox on a Windows 8.1 machine using a DWA-140 (Dlink) wifi adapter.
I have used bridging on both VB and VMWare player successfully on my office PC with ethernet and Wifi so I know how it works and that it works.
I setup the bridge on the correct adapter but the Linux OS will not find a network to connect to (I use Ubuntu and have tested with Mint and Ubuntu Gnome). The networking works just fine with NAT but I cannot get it to connect to my standalone Linux machine in another room.
Is this some kind of limitation of the Wifi adaptor or a problem with Windows 8.1? I have also tried to bridge with VMware player and it will not work there either.
