Hello,
first of all, I want to tell you, that this kind of problem sounds very unlikely unusual to associate with VirtualBox, so I reinstalled the entire operating system and reinstalled VirtualBox after that as the only program and was able to reproduce this problem.
When I installed VirtualBox on my Windows 7 notebook (which worked very well before) I noticed that the Windows explorer is crashing unusual often. My first idea was to reboot the device, when I noticed that the shut down button in the start menu was also useless - so I was forced to hard reboot the device. After that reboot I tried to uninstall VirtualBox because of its problems, but even the uninstaller is buggy.
So my only choice (well, I could have tried the system recovery, but want to make sure VirtualBox is deleded completely) was to reinstall Windows.
I'm not 100% sure whether the problem is on Windows oder VirtualBox side but this bug is only with the latest 4.3.16 version.

The only bits of VirtualBox that run all the time are the device drivers. I've never heard of these causing problems with the Windows shell. VirtualBox 4.3.16 has issues, but those only arise when you try to launch a VM.
