Windows 10

Post by nsa »

I successfully installed Windows 10 32 bit in a Virtualbox session and was able to play about with it quite happily (That was Friday).
I came back to the session today (Sunday) and was unable to get the session to start again - it gave messages - very strange messages about Guru Meditation.
So I removed the instance and tried to reinstall a new version.
I am now unable to install at all. It gets to the very first screen - blue with white (four) windows. I start to get the while dots circling, and then it fails with a critical error that turns out to be HostMemoryLow - that it claims is Non-Fatal. It says it is 'Unable to allocate and lock memory'. It tells me to 'Please close applications to free up memory or close the VM'.
I have tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions, and tried changing some of the varied options when setting up the instance, but nothing now works.
Anyone have any ideas what is happening, and what 'default' values I should be trying?

I don't know why you "need" it but here is the link.

So, try allocating more RAM for the virtual machine: 2 GB (i.e. 2048 MB) should be enough.

Settings -> System -> Motherboard -> Base Memory

And how much memory is installed on the Host system?
How much memory is available? Any heavy applications running?

Take a look at this ticket as well: Guru Meditation (HostMemoryLow) when low memory

Killing the GoogleCrashHandler process did the trick :D
I don't think anyone could guess that as a solution!

The same thing happened to me too. In an 6GB RAM host, i had already opened a VM (reserving 2GB RAM). When i tried to also open the Win10 VM (reserving another 2GB RAM), it crashed, the same way nsa describes in the first post.

I guess when a 2 GB VM tries to boot up, it's best to have >2GB free RAM on the host (that's more than 4GB total RAM).
