Hi, I am trying to set my screen resolution to 1024x1280x32 and have followed the commands above to do so. Everything seems to have worked and the system reports that it is set to 1024x1280x32 but this appears to have no affect on the Windows 10 guest itself. Is there an issue with setting a Portrait resolution ? Do I need to disable guest additions in the guest OS? What VM display settings should be used to get Win 10 to see this resolution?

I struggled with the issue that I couldn't get my Windows 10 guest to a resolution higher than 1600x1200. The setting of CustomVideoMode[n] described above did not solve my issue.
I found the global setting "GUI/MaxGuestResolution" was set to "1600,1200" which gave me the hint that this is restricting my max resolution.
Reading the value of the property gave:
Code: Select all
VBoxManage getextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution
Value: 1600,1200
Setting it via
Code: Select all
VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution "3840,2160"
solved the issue for me

You shouldn't have to touch the global setting at all.

Hello,
I have the same problem on an Linux Host but the execution of the described commands don't change anything. The global resolution is not set. Someone an another idea?

I am running Win10 on a Ubuntu Host and the following two things solved the problem for me. I have enabled 3d and 2d support in virtualbox and changed the resolution on the guest to the max available and after that I powered it off and on again and since then it is auto resizing as it is supposed to be.

Hye,
I have encountered the same problem with a virtual Win 10 on a Ubuntu 16.04 LTS host.
I used the steps given by lozosky :

VBoxManage.exe setextradata "VM-Name" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32
which has no effect for me. The resolution remains to 800x600.
Then I used the command given by korden :
Code: Select all
VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution "1366,768"
which increased the resolution to 1301x744. I was close to the wanted one.
Finally, I used this command to get the right 1366x768 resolution :
Code: Select all
VBoxManage setextradata "VM-Name" GUI/LastGuestSizeHint 1366,768
It works, but I don't know why.
I hopes this will help.

VBox is totaly closed
However each time I try to start windows it comes into 1152x864. When I put VB full screen, windows keeps the same size. I tried to activate 2d and 3d, I gave the maximum amount of video memory, same result. Guest additions installed too. I'm a bit at a list here. All recommendations are welcome.
Update: Found it!

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution auto
fixed the issue for me. Not windows auto resize inside of the VM screen!
