Network problem on windows 8.1 host

Post by gbswales »

This is the first time I have used virtual box on this computer which is running Windows 8.1 64bit
I managed to install the windows 10 preview successfully but no matter what virtual box settings I try I cannot connect to the internet
I am not bothered about accessing my network - just the internet so I can test windows 10
I have an Asus sabertooth motherboard with an 8 core amd processor
Device manager shows Realtek PCIe GBE family controller under network adapters and I have no problems connecting to the internet using windows 8.1
It also now shows VirtualBox Host Only Ethernet adapter and both report they are working normally
I tried updating the VB Host Only driver which completed OK

So far I have tried
NAT with PCnet-PCI II, PCnet-FAST III and the default offered which was Intel Pro 1000 MT Desktop (though didnt expect this to work as I am all AMD)
NAT Network - with the first two options and
Host Only Adapter with the first two options

However when I start the VM there is no network connection and windows cannot see any connection
My network card is cable connected direct to ASUS router

I have looked up various solutions on forums but they seem to suggest changing settings that dont appear in the current version VirtualBox Manager
I have only an elementary knowledge about networking so need some fairly precise help if anyone is kind enough to offer it

I have also tried with my firewall disconnected but it makes no difference - windows 10 does not detect any hardware so I am unable to change any settings there
