VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
Hey
I'm trying to get VirtualBox to run on Windows 10 as a host.
When I try and start up a VM, it now gives me the following error: Any ideas as to what this means?
Do you think it's an error on W10, or is it something wrong with the Guest VM (Docker)

You're lucky if you can get it to run as a guest at the moment. As for running in a host? Not supported. Still a year+ out before release.I'm trying to get VirtualBox to run on Windows 10 as a host.
Re: VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
For reference in this thread, here's the ticket someone opened for this:
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13459
I've tried the latest VirtualBox test build, but still no luck. Hoping for an interim solution well before the summer(!), but in the meantime I might have to enable and use (gasp!) HyperV...which will preclude me from testing new builds of VirtualBox, unfortunately.

Re: VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
Did you even read the information MS provided about running this preview as your main system? I can see it as a guest and for the most part it works ( if you leave all settings at default and select 8.1 ) but I see a lot of re-installing issues to use this on metal.rseiler wrote:For reference in this thread, here's the ticket someone opened for this:

Yes, I did. I have multiple systems though so try to have important things not in VMs as well. I have had good luck using W10 as a guest on Win81.Perryg wrote:Did you even read the information MS provided about running this preview as your main system? Re: VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
I expect that bug ticket will be closed (invalid) very soon. Windows 10 host support is not sensible, not claimed, and I doubt it will get much attention until release is much closer. The devteam have more pressing matters on their plate at the moment.
Re: VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
Do you happen to recall the situation with the Win8 beta? I'm curious if the current VB then when run on it had a similar issue.
I looked back in the release notes and saw that "Windows 8" first started to appear shortly after the release of the Consumer Preview (which was several months after the relatively little-used Developer Preview).
That was 6 or 7 months before RTM, so quite encouraging.

Re: VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
I have Build 9841 of Windows 10 Preview running on VBOX 4.3.12 r93733.
I installed it from .ISO on a newly created VM using "Custom" installation rather than "Upgrade".
It does work.
However, Guest Additions only installs part-way -- i.e., Shared Folders do not work.
The mouse capture under Guest Additions DOES install and works seamlessly.
I've not yet tried USB but I may have to if I can't get Shared Folders to work.
I get a popup message window with the title bar "Oracle VM VirtualBox Guest Additions 4.3.12 Setup"
with the error message:
"The VirtualBox Guest Additions cannot be installed on this version of Windows."
I can find no EventLog or msi log that contains the audit trail.
I'll keep plugging away at this.

Re: VirtualBox on Windows 10 Technical Preview
I should have noted that VBox is running on a 16GB WIN7 64 real machine with an AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1075T processor.
All the other VMs (win2k, winxp, win7, win8, win8.1) work as they should.
