Windows 10 Technical Preview

Post by loukingjr »

Anyone know if it's possible or how to install the GAs in Windows 10? Running 4.3.16.

If anyone figures it out, I'd sure like to know too.

VBox 4.3.16 refuses to install the guest additions on the Windows Technical Preview (which internally is Windows version 6.4).
I hope the next VBox release will bring some improvement...

Give them time, I'm sure they will have a version of the Guest Additions that supports Windows 10. Other than the GA, Windows 10 runs fine under the current version of VB.

Actually it runs much better than I expected. I can stream audio, video, Netflix etc.

Guys, 1) it just came out yesterday, 2) VirtualBox devs didn't have it on their hands, so 3) please don't start complaining about this-or-that working or not, can't happen...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

I assume by "guys" you are not including me. Especially right after I said how well it runs. :D

No Lou, but the forums have been flooded with Windows 10 "installation problems" and I really would like people to understand that "Hey what's wrong?" for a 1-day released not-yet-completed OS is not yet appropriate.

Would you mind starting a thread with something like "Windows 10 how-to" (or something like that) so we can send people to a specific thread? Where you can edit the first post and keep it up-to-date?

not particularly. I haven't been on the site nearly as much as I used to. nothing to do with the forum. I'm just busy with other things. perhaps someone else will.

btw, I realize this is somewhat my fault. I never expected the GA's to install. I was just curious if someone had found a workaround.

I force installed Guest Additions in Windows 10 using

Code: Select all

VBoxWindowsAdditions-amd64.exe /force
but the Driver failed to load and I had to rollback. So obviously some work needs to be done. Oh well. Patience is a virtue.

Sorry if I was misunderstood as being complaining, I merely intended to provide the information that earlier posters had asked for.

Hi.
I'm new to all this (virtualization).
I've successfully installed a Win10 guest on my Win7 pro host.
I see that no folder sharing is possible without GuestAdditions.
I managed to exchange files between the two machines via TeamViewer.
Thats my workaround.

I also had issues with screen size.
Found an answer here:

Now everything works really well.

If you use Bridged Networking you can access shared folders anywhere on the network. I can access my NAS and all other computers from the Windows 10 guest VM. I do miss the shared clipboard and the higher resolution display settings. I believe I need the guest additions for those.

Thanks for that reference. I now have Windows 10 running full screen at 1920x1080 :D

Just a general update to any who have not noticed: VB 4.3.18 is out and has some tweaks for Windows 10. It is now working OK (a few graphics glitches sometimes) for me.
