Using a USB Scanner in Windows Guest

Post by ronaldo »

This is my features:
1 - I have a Ubuntu Precise 12.04LTS as Host and a Virtual Machine installed Windows 7 Home Basic.
2 - I have a Kodak Scanner i1120

Well, This scanner don't work in Ubuntu SO because its driver is developed based on TWAIN API the only runs on Windows, so I installed a Windows 7 virtual machine and i'm trying to use this scanner in my VM.

The USB is recognized in VirtualBox but when Windows try to install driver i got a " :!: " in "Device Manager". I tried to install the same scanner with the same driver and the same Windows 7 in a notebook and works fine, just in VirtualBox don't works.

Any ideia how to solve this problem ?

Right click the guest in the main manager and then click on show log. Save and post as an attachment

I clicked on "show log" but apper 4 tab (vbox.log, vbox.log1 .. and vbox.log3). The problem is i don't see any change in log when i started the Windows 7, see a peace from vbox.log file:

Code: Select all

VirtualBox VM 4.3.16 r95972 linux.amd64 (Sep 9 2014 17:57:04) release log
00:00:00.441293 Log opened 2014-10-01T15:36:35.356435000Z
00:00:00.441296 Build Type: release
And today is 2014-10-01

Oh I though you wanted help but if you understand the log files then you should be able to figure it out. Hang in there.

Assuming that this is a USB scanner then the following at the beginning of the log file tells you what is missing.

00:00:00.492436 Installed Extension Packs:
00:00:00.492473 None installed!

You will also need your user name in the vboxusers group as defined in your users manual.

So, how can i install the "Extension Packs" ? And i already add my user in vboxusers group but the problems continue.

This is my typical USB troubleshooting list. You just made me add another step. Step 2 which you're missing from your setup. So far...
-------------------------------------------------------
Follow the steps below. If there is a failure, please state which step failed:
  1. Make sure that the Extension Pack is installed on the host. The same version as VirtualBox.
  2. Make sure that USB 2.0 is enabled in your VM settings.
  3. Create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID. Check also http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids to make sure that you have the numbers correct.
  4. Unplug the device.
  5. Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to.
  6. Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest. You might get a "New hardware found" wizard on the host, that's normal.
  7. If the device shows up in your host and is not captured by the filter, either the filter is incorrect, or there might be a problem with your filter installation.
  8. If the device shows up, but as unavailable, "eject" it from your host (if you can), but leave it plugged in. It should show up as available.
  9. Are you by any chance using a USB 3.0 port?
  10. Is the VirtualBox USB Driver installed in your host?
  11. If on a Linux host, are you a member of the 'vboxusers' group?
  12. If on a Linux host, run "sudo update-usbids".
  13. Try your favorite search engine. It can work miracles most of the time.
