Adding Domain Controller to VB causes it to stop working

I've created a base VM in VB, which is Windows 2008 server R2. It installs fine and I've run the updates on it to bring up to date.
I make a clone of this to save me having to start over in case anything goes wrong and I add a Active Directory Domain Controller. I then run windows update, install the few updates needed and add a few accounts I'm going to use later.
I then run sysprep, shutdown and make a clone of this to use.
However, whenever I start the clone or the original version with Domain controller on I always get the message in the link below.
'Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer please restart the installation"
I then have to go back to the base VM I made and install the domain controller again and end up in this loop.
What I'm trying to do is follow this blog post,

so I can setup a test environment to show people what it is capable of but I'm not a techie and why I'm following step by step instructions to get there.
Does anyone know why this comes up or offer any advise?
Thanks very much
