Access serial port in windows XP guest in win 7 host

Post by toto_71B »

Hello,

I'am using virtualbox 4.3.16 on windows 7 64bits host, i have windows xp for guest system. I have a specific application in it which use the serial port but i'am not able to make it working, the application see serial port disconnected.

In the virtual machine settings i have configured like that the serial :
port_com.png
port_com.png (55.68 KiB) Viewed 3731 times
That are the logs for the virtual machine :
VBoxSVC.zip
(1.03 KiB) Downloaded 26 times
Do-you have an idea how to make it working ?

Thanks by advance

Please show me a screenshot of the expanded "Ports" branch of the host device manager? I want to see confirmation that COM1: exists on this host.

Also, the host device name should be "COM1:", i.e. note the colon. The colon distinguishes it from a file called "COM1" existing in the default directory.

You can see of the following picture on the host machine :
host_port_com.png
host_port_com.png (86.54 KiB) Viewed 3720 times
I will try using the colon after the name of port

Good, thanks. That confirms that the host port you want to use does exist.

Next thing to see is the same thing for the device manager in the guest. XP guests are not always "plug and play" for legacy devices. If you added the serial port after XP was installed then you may need to "Add new hardware" in the control panel.

When i had installed windows xp on the virtual machine i hadn't set the serial port in virtual machine settings, i had done it after the install of windows xp. I will check that and let you now if it works.

I have tried today like you have explained, but it doesn't work better, in the settings of the virtual machine, i have configured the serial port like you said :
port_com_virtualbox.png
port_com_virtualbox.png (58.24 KiB) Viewed 3673 times
In the guest machine in Windows device manager the serial port nammed COM1 is right here and correctly installed.

My software which is in guest machine and configured to use serial port COM1, isn't able to connect to the alarm system with this serial port. I don't know what part is wrong configured :(

Well, your VirtualBox configuration now looks correct, so now I would turn my attention to the requirements of the guest application. It should be simple enough to do a simple test with HyperTerminal or similar in the guest and in another PC - with matching bit rate and parity settings of course - to prove that a connection is present. Of course you'll need a crossover serial cable.
