4.3.16 Vista 32 bit install, crash with guru meditation

Post by DualShock »

Hi,

I'm trying to install 32 bit Vista in a VM on OS X Mavericks 10.9.4. During the install I get a guru meditation crash. I believe this happens after the initial reboot, but I stepped away from my computer and did not see if it rebooted.

I did modify some of the settings from the defaults before I installed (16 GB RAM, 3D and 2D acceleration turned on, 256 MB VRAM). Also I am installing from an MSDN Vista SP2 iso.

Code: Select all

00:17:56.944397 Expression: RT_SUCCESS_NP(rc)
00:17:56.944398 Location : /Users/vbox/tinderbox/4.3-mac-rel/src/VBox/VMM/VMMAll/PGMAllPool.cpp(2510) int pgmPoolMonitorInsert(PGMPOOL*, PGMPOOLPAGE*)

00:17:56.944460 !! Guru Meditation -2701 (VERR_VMM_RING0_ASSERTION)
00:17:56.944497 !!
00:17:56.944549 !!R0-Assertion Failed!!
Could someone help with this please? I can't seem to attach the log as it's bigger than 128 KB zipped. If you could let me know what other parts of the log are needed, I can paste just those parts. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, what do you expect 32-bit Vista will do with 16GB RAM? Surely you're aware of this? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library ... dows_vista

Ah! You're right I completely forgot. I was so used to setting up 64 bit VM's. I was setting up a 32 bit one because I needed to run something that requires 32 bit Windows due to driver issues.

I'll try it again with less than 4 GB RAM and report back.

When you do, please make sure you provide Minimum information needed for assistance. In particular, a complete VM log file (as a zipped attachment).

p.s. Vista and Win7 "Home Basic" x64 editions are artificially limited to 8GB RAM? That's a new one on me! Is this limit really enforced?

And 32 bit Vista to 3 GB usable, even if you have 4GB installed! So...
Yes, that's true. And there are work arounds involving modifying the...uhhm.. (I forgot what its called) bcdedit or something. I guess its something between the BIOS and the OS...

Thanks all, it works now. It was the RAM setting, I reduced it to 3 GB and Vista installed fine.

Only issue I'm seeing now is that Aero is not working. I've turned on the 3D and 2D video acceleration options and increased the VRAM to 256 MB. I installed the guest additions in normal (not safe mode) and checked off the Direct3D checkbox, and clicked No in the popup that followed.
