VirtualBox Manager doesn't open; No error message

Post by peachfuzz »

I recently tried installing VirtualBox on my Windows machine but I haven't been able to get the VirtualBox Manager to appear when I run it despite numerous attempts; VirtualBox.exe and VirtualBox Interface are listed under background processes but no window appears when run. No error messages are displayed and the system event log says it was installed successfully - I've tried installing versions 4.3.12 - 4.3.17, none of which worked.

When I try to end the VBoxSVC process I get an access denied error, and with 4.3.17 I get an error message saying failed to create COM object when ending the VirtualBox.exe process.

Code: Select all

Callee RC:
CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x80080005)
I haven't created a new ticket on the bug tracker yet since I'm not sure if it's an issue with VirtualBox or another application and I wanted to confirm what information would be useful to include or leave out.

System Specs:

Code: Select all

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
Processor: Intel i7-4770K
Video Card: GeForce GTX 750 Ti
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 extreme 6
Memory: 16 gb
Antivirus:
I've changed my antivirus software from avast to Kasperky Pure 3.0 and tried running Virtual Box with antivirus enabled and disabled (tested with both avast and Kaspersky) but was still unable to get the Virtual Box manager to appear. Malwarebytes is also installed, but it is the free version so I don't believe it is actively running on my system when trying to open VBox.

Misc things done to test:
Installed without network bridge, enabled/disabled NVIDIA Network Service, enabled/disabled Hyper-V, restarted system between installs/uninstalls of VirtualBox, checked disk for errors and none were found, ran in compatibility mode for Windows 7

Misc applications installed:
JRE 7 & 8, . NET 4.5, VS Express 2013, Eclipse IDE, Microsoft Office 2013, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Python 2.7 *, Silverlight *
*were installed after first trying to run VirtualBox but I wasn't sure if they might also cause incompatibility with VBox

System, applications, and drivers are kept up to date as far as I'm aware.

Any help trying to determine what might be causing an issue would be greatly appreciated

Just a quick update, I have the same issue trying to run version 4.2.14. I also changed the primary graphics card to use the one on the motherboard without much luck.

Another update, the VBoxSVC.exe process can only be ended if it was started on it's own without VirtualBox.exe.
If VirtualBox.exe is launched, attempting to end VBoxSVC.exe in the task manager appears to do nothing on the first try but attempting to end the process again results in an access denied error.

I also found these messages in the system event log, but they don't appear to occur at the times I tried to end the processes

Code: Select all

The application (Oracle VM VirtualBox, from vendor Oracle Corporation) has the following problem: To function properly, Oracle VM VirtualBox must be reinstalled after you upgrade Windows.

Code: Select all

Application 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxSVC.exe' (pid 4964) cannot be restarted - Application SID does not match Conductor SID..

Please confine discussion of the 4.3.17 test build to the topic where you found it.
