Could you please suggest why I can not get the printer to show as online in VB running XP:
USB Brother printer is attached to host and is showing as ready in Gnome ubuntu 14.04.
The usb address is ticked in the setup for the usb in VB.
I have installed the printer drivers in VB.
I attach the log.

To use USB your user name must be in the vboxusers group ( on the host ) after which you need to reboot for permissions to take affect.

Thank you I checked, and have just done a reboot. I am a member of the VB user group and yet the printer is not showing as being on line. What else should I check?

Check your user id and make sure you are also a member of the lp and lpadmin group.

There were two reasons:
1. I was not a member of Lp.
2. In my struggle to get the printer working, I had installed two printers pointing to the same printer. The default was not connecting to the host's computer. The other one was connecting and was on line but did not show in the task bar as it only shows one. I deleted one and the other one showed as on line.
