Hello all,
Ever since I've moved my VM folder to an external drive, I've been unable to install any guest OS in vbox. What happens is that (I've tried both Win 7 and Debian, full dvd + netinstall) it goes on until it reaches a certain point like close to finish, but just hangs there. The error in the case of Debian is 'file too large' If you need a specific error I can run the installer once more and paste here. Btw, the external drive has more than enough space.
What do you think may the problem be here? Thanks.

Re: Unable to install any guests on Mac host
Did you update VBox's Preferences to reflect that new location on the external hard drive ?
Else, VBox will use the default (former) location.
Need sleep?

Of course I have, it was the first thing I did. I create the VMs like usual, but when it comes to installing the OS it just hangs in the middle..ChipMcK wrote:Did you update VBox's Preferences to reflect that new location on the external hard drive ?

I'll take a wild guess and say that the external drive is FAT32 formatted and therefore can't handle files larger than 4GB.hemlockii wrote:Ever since I've moved my VM folder to an external drive, I've been unable to install any guest OS in vbox.
Re: Unable to install any guests on Mac host
Not a bad idea, I wasn't aware FAT had that kind of restriction. However that only solved part of the problem -I dont get the file too large error anymore-, I carved a ext4 partition chunk on the drive, but it continues to hang. Specifically it hangs near the end after I choose 'Configure and install software'. I followed this thread but that didn't help either. Also sometimes (I think when I use an .iso instead of a burned DVD/USB) the installer says media has changed for no reason, even though I didn't touch it. So I can configure the package manager without problems, but the last 2 options (configure and install software + install GRUB) I wasn't able to finish. Any other suggestions? Can I for example leave out that step and just install GRUB and move on from there? Will it even boot with a base system alone?mpack wrote:I'll take a wild guess and say that the external drive is FAT32 formatted and therefore can't handle files larger than 4GB.hemlockii wrote:Ever since I've moved my VM folder to an external drive, I've been unable to install any guest OS in vbox.
