Disk drive help??

Post by Riah »

Okay I have very little idea of what I'm doing here, hopefully someone will be willing to help me. I'm just trying to use virtualbox to play old 16 bit cd rom games that I can't get to work on my 64 bit windows 7.
So.. I have windows 2000 professional set up now. (hopefully these games will work in this system, its what I was playing them on 14 years ago) Well now I don't know what to do from here, to get the windows 2000 to recognize the disk drive, to install and play the games. :?
Any help? Thanks.

Moved to "Windows Hosts".

The easiest procedure is probably to image the CDs using ImgBurn (creating .ISO files), locating the image in a convenient host folder. Then mount the ISO files in the VM using the "Device" menu of the running VM. It's possible to mount the host drive directly, but ISOs are better for many reasons.

Just to let you know, virtual machines may not do so well on playing games - there may be jerky motion & delayed inputs that might make the game hard to play.

That said, it might work just fine.

It sounds like your 2000 guest can't see your physical PC's CD drive. Check the settings for the virtual CD drive in the guest settings point your guest CD drive at your host CD drive. Open your Virtualbox main window, click your 200 guest, click the Storage settings, then the virtual CD drive. On the far right is a little CD icon that opens a drop-down menu, showing the various things the guest CD drive can read from. Choose the host CD drive with the game disc in it.

Thank you both so much. I got everything to work. And the games don't lag! I'm very happy
