I am trying to figure out how to get my XP guest in my 8.1 host to recognize my computer's wifi. Any suggestions?

VirtualBox's purpose is to simulate a PC, not to recognize anything on your host. Just set the VM to NAT mode (which is the default), and let the simulation worry about the implementation details.
