Ubuntu 14.04.1 64 Bit on VirtualBox 4.3.14 r95030

Post by hannibalstgt »

Hello,

I am a new VirtualBox user and I have tried to install Ubuntu 64 Bit 14.04.1 on Virtual Box 4.3.14 r95030.
Host is Windows 7 - 64 Bit.
This worked pretty well, but now I have a problem with the guest's window size.

If I go into Ubuntu's system settings there is a "display setting" icon.
But if I open the GUI behind it, it offers only a built in screen size of 640x480 pixels.
And this is really not funny if you own a 1920 x 1200 screen.

I gave the display 128 MB of memory in the VM settings - that I think should be enough
And I only specified 1 screen.

I tried VBoxManage and tried to set a different screen size, but this does no reflect in the choice for
the screen size in Ubuntu.
It seems it just changes the screen size on the host and just zooms the geust window content into this larger window.

How can a bigger screen made available for the guest.
At least 1024x768 should be available, which also should be the default.
Multiple screen dimensions to select from, would be even better.

Who can provide help and give a detailed workflow how to allow larger guest screen sizes.

--------------------------

There is another problem, which I don't know if VirtualBox is to blame about that.
It is in Ubuntu impossible to provide a standard German Keyboard PC105
The key combination (in German) "AltGr + q" does not generate the @ sign as it does in Windows.
It just does provide nothing - not even a "blank".
Can it be, that VirtualBox does not foreward this key combination to Ubuntu ?

In the /etc/defaults/keyboard file of Ubuntu the settings specified are
"PC105" "de" (German) and XKBVARIANT = "nodeadkeys"

Is there anybody who knows something about this ?

Many thanks in advance

Wolfgang

Install the guest additions ( in the guest )

Different keyboard layouts are controlled by the guest, not VirtualBox so you need to ask the OS forum of the guest

The Linux guest additions are installed in the guest and are working well, e.g. for shared folders etc.

Also the /etc/defaults/keyboard file of Ubuntu for the keyboard settings have been modified to
"PC105" "de" (German) and XKBVARIANT = "nodeadkeys"

I definitely will post a question in the Ubuntu forum.

Hello,

problem of the guest's window dimensions solved.

An additional installtion of the VBLinuxGuestAdditions did the trick.

Hello,

may be "off topic" here, but as it was posted as subproblem here, this seems to be the soution:

In the Ubuntu Main Window

Click onto the language symbol "DE" in the right upper corner of the window.

Select "Texteingabe-Einstellungen" -> the "Texteingabe" window appears.

Click on "Tastatureinstellungen...." in the lower right corner of the "Texteingabe" window
-> the "Tastatur" window appears.

Select tab "Tastaturkürzel"

Select "Texteingabe"

Set "Compose-Taste" to "Rechte Windows-Taste"
Set "Taste für alternative Zeichen" to "Rechte Alt-Taste".

Done.

Now the characters should appear when pressed on the keyboard.
