Restoring a Win 8/8.1 guest does not work

Hi,

I am using VB 4.3.14 r95030 on Linuxmint 16 Cinnamon (=Ubuntu 13.10).

All works very well using Win XP or 7 guests. But trying to restore a saved Win 8 64bit or 8.1 64bit guest it always fails. First it looks like restoring is normal. But at the end, this error occurs:

Code: Select all

Für die virtuelle Maschine Windows 8.1 Professional 64bit konnte keine neue Sitzung eröffnet werden.

No error info.

Fehlercode:NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)
Komponente:ProgressProxy
Interface:IProgress {c20238e4-3221-4d3f-8891-81ce92d9f913}
First I thought my Win 8 is broken. And because it was time for Win 8.1 I created a new guest from scratch. But I have the same error there also. Despite this problem, both images are working without any issue. Restoring a XP or 7 guest works without any problem!

Does anyone has an idea how to solve this problem? It is really annoying.

Tnx in advance,
Enkidu

There is nothing wrong with Win8 support.

Try reverting to VBox 4.3.12, see if this is related to the hardening issue.

If you want to continue this discussion then provide a log file from the affected VM: Minimum information needed for assistance.

Guest: Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, Guest addons installed, 4GB ram (details see attachment)

Logs: Win was started, saved & restored. See attachment.

As I said, try downgrading to 4.3.12. I see from the log that your VM is using 3D acceleration, making it quite possible that the hardening issue discussed is the problem, as discussed in the "4.3.14 conflicts with anti-virus" discussion sticked at the top of the "Windows Host" forum.

I also notice that you're assigning 2 cores to the VM, when your CPU only has two cores to start with. Usually, this is not a good idea.

I will downgrade asap. I set number of cpus to one. I was not aware of this because in settings window, 2 is still in the green part... Tnx for the hints.

As soon as I downgraded to .12 I let you know the results.

... using 4.3.12 and corresponding guest addons, it is also not ok. The difference is, in .14 I get the errormsg from above. In .12 VB just terminates without any hint/errormsg.

See logs attached...

Edit: I just noticed that I forgot to also downgrad the extentionpack. Done! But same behaviour.

If you have a saved state associated with this VM then you need to discard it (right click, "Discard saved state"). Saved states are not intended to be portable.

I always start my guest, save and try to restore it. I did not try to restore it across versions.

Now I am down to 4.3.2 but still same behavior in all 4.3.x versions. Only .14 shows an error and quits.

So it seems to be a 4.3 issue.

Can I use an image created on 4.3 on 4.2?

Ok, I got it!

As soon as I disable 3D acceleration, restore does work again with Win 8*. But 3D works fine on 4.2 (all Win*) and 4.3 Win 7. On my system, the problem only occurs on 4.3 and Win 8* as guest!

Can this be fixed?

I'm not on the devteam, so I can't definitively answer the last question. Speaking as a developer myself, so far it looks like you have some kind of OpenGL problem, but we haven't established that the problem is in VirtualBox, all we've established is that VirtualBox uses OpenGL. For the devs to be interested I suspect the evidence will need to improve, and ideally be repeatable, and then you'd still have to raise a bugtracker ticket.

Anyway, many tnx for your support.

Soon I will change Du Linuxmint 17, so maybe then all is working again. :) I do not need 3D, so it does not bother me at all.
