I'd like to run PPC apps on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro (OSX Mavericks 10.9.4) which I've been told needs to be done in OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard. Since Snow Leopard won't even install on my machine I've understood that a virtual environment is the way to go, and have tried out VirtualBox but without much success (with Snow Leopard that is, VirtualBox itself installed fine). Having researched the subject I'm a little confused...

I've read that current VirtualBox versions don't support anything but "server" versions of OSX. According to online speculations people are referring to OSX end-user agreements where OSX can't be installed on hardware which isn't Apple, but in my case I'll be running Snow Leopard on a genuine Mac and I purchased the original Snow Leopard 10.6.3. installer (white retail version DVD, not the grey ones that came with Macs), so I don't understand what the problem is. Because of this I tried installing it on various older versions of Virtualbox, but I'm still getting error messages when it boots.
So, do I still need to buy the Snow Leopard "server" version DVD installer, and will it actually work on a 2012 Mac running Mavericks when the regular Snow Leopard refuses to install on that same hardware and just gives me error messages in VirtualBox?

It is possible to install 10.6.* as a guest on 10.9.*. You would want to read this thread which will give you some helpful info.

And that's the standard Snow Leopard installation DVD you're referring to, and not the "server" version?

I'm definitely a newbie at this as I didn't understand much the thread you linked to it other than it seems some people are having success running Snow Leopard in VB.
I'll give the thread a couple of additional reads and see if I can figure something out.
