Remote desktop on Windows hosts

Post by leefool »

I have tried remote desktop on Win7(64bit) with guest Ubuntu14.04(32bit) and I get exception and crash of the virtual machine when trying to access it with remote desktop. I used latest VB release and extension pack.
Anyone has remote access working on Windows7 or Windows XP?
If you do - can you please provide which guest OS have you used? And which VB and extension pack versions?

Ideally I would like to run some combination of Windows/Linux for host/guest or Linux/Windows.

Appreciate your help,
Lee

I use both in-the-Windows-guest remote desktop and Virtualbox remote desktop with no trouble. We'll need more info to help. First, what actual version number is the "latest VB release"? There's been a few glitches of late.

Are you trying to access your guest using the guest OS's built-in remote desktop software, or are you trying to access the guest using Virtualbox's remote desktop?

The IP address you're using will tell the answer. If it's the guest's IP address, then you're using in-the-guest remote desktop. If you're using the host IP address and the port number set up in the guest settings in Virtualbox GUI, then you're using Virtualbox remote desktop. If you're using the host IP address and no port number, then you're remoting into the host which can interfere with the guest's operation. One other possibility, since you're using a Windows host, is that the host port number, default 3389, is the same as the default guest settings port number, also 3389. Not certain what happens when remoting in while the host and guest both have the same port number...

maybe a log file would help - see viewtopic.php?f=24&t=48476

I will have to check the version numbers (not at VB box right now) but it was 4.3.15-r95713 if my memory serves right.

I use VB's remote desktop. In the GUI under "remote display" I enabled it and setup port 5005 to not interfere with port 3389 (which is Windows remote desktop standard port).
As I am trying to access over the router/firewall - I setup port forwarding to forward both 3389 and 5005 to my host Windows7 PC.
Then from another machine I would open RemoteDesktop (standard Windows software) and enter <RouterIP>::5005.
Both my Windows host PC and machine from which I am trying to do remote access are on the same LAN.

My understanding was that this is the right mechanism to use with VB RemoteDesktop and Extension pack.
And RDE is enabled. I have looked at the log file and last thing I saw was a line something like this "Opening IP4 port".
But maybe my setup is not correct?

Really appreciate your help, I will try posting correct version numbers and the log file later today.

I got the info on my setup:
Host: Windows7 64bit
Guest: Windows7 64bit
VB: 4.3.15r95713 (latest from virus related crashes forum post)
Extension pack: 4.3.14r95030 (latest on download link)

I setup port forwarding on my wireless router to forward 5006 to my Host:5006 port.
Then from another machine on the same LAN i try accessing using Windows RemoteDesktop application Host:5006.
The virtual machine immediately crashes with this error:

I will add the log file in the next post, run out of attachments linit.

continuing my setup info from my prev post.
Tail of my log file is this:
w7_64bit_log_file.PNG
w7_64bit_log_file.PNG (40.65 KiB) Viewed 3292 times
As you can see it tries to open the IP connection, negotiates security method with client (i have set Auth to "Null") and then starts aborting my VM.

Let me know if i need to post the entire log file.

But basically i can setup the VM and it runs fine but crashes when i try RemoteDesktop connection which i have enabled for this VM.
Similar crash happens when i install Ubuntu32 on host Windows7 64bit.

Help very much appreciated

another comment: i also tried adding port forwarding under "Network" properties for the virtual machine using this:
<HostIP>:5005 for host and
<blank>:5005 for guest.
Same result - crash as soon as i attempt remote desktop connection.

I was able to connect when running my VM on a machine with bigger memory.
So this issue is resolved for me.

My original installation was on 4GB RAM machine and that's where remote desktop connection was failing.
I tried running VM on a host with 8GB memory and remote connection worked.
But so far only for "NULL" authentication.
When i choose "external" - remote desktop connection is denied.
I will read more on Authentication and try things before posting a question about it.
