Is there a way to change the audio ouput device that receives the audio played from the guest? It seems like such a feature should exists with VMs. As far as I know; implementing this exact feature should be very easy on Windows, as they even have the exclusive mode option.
Basically I want to output guest sound in headset instead of speakers - but still have host on speakers.

If there is a per application audio manager for your Windows host, then you could assign the VM to your specific output.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Re: Change Audio Output Device
You could on Windows XP: by setting default audio output to X and run App A. Then set default audio output to Y and run App B. However, on Windows 7 they introduced a new feature to automatically swap App A to Y. So I can't do that from Windows to my knowledge. If such an option isn't currently present, I don't think I can just grab the audio of a program from a third party.

Do you believe that this is a hardware-simulator's issue to address (like VirtualBox), or a host-specific program's issue?

I believe VirtualBox could easily (at least on the Windows platform) implement the option to output audio to specific streams. So I'd call it an issue from their end.
