I know this has been asked before...

Post by mdurisseau »

but I can't seem to find it with a search!

I want to install Win 7 64-bit on a Mac 10.6.8 host, running VirtualBox 4.3.14. I have set up the guest to be Windows 7 64-bit, but when the install boots for the final time, I get an error. The 32-bit version I have runs well. What am I doing wrong?

Weird. I don't get an error. What's your error? Any chance you have a log to accompany it? See loukingjr's link...

Let me give the proper information:

I am running VirtualBox 4.3.14, with Guest Additions installed.
Host: Macbook 4,1, running 10.6.8. Guest is Windows 7, 64-bit.

The log is attached.

I am getting the BSOD with the "Reference_by_pointer" error.

One other thing: I have a 32-bit copy that works just fine.

I need a screen shot of the error and a log file of the guest just after it fails. ( after shut down )

When I looked at the log it said <800MBs was assigned to the Windows 7 guest. If I remember correctly W7 needs at least 1GB and could really use 2GB. I didn't check vram.

Win 7 64 works with as little as 512 MB unless you press it. Really need to see if it is the install or the OS that is generating the issue though and at this point there are no real indications of problems.

You are correct...I had 768MB assigned...VRAM is 64MB...should I make changes?

I can't use it with 2 processors, either! I don't understand what's wrong!

I was just going by what Microsoft had to say…
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

Yes optimally you should have at least 1GB if you want to do anything near real work, but it will and does work just fine with 512 MB. Set yours to 512 and see.
